Beckmans College of Design at
Stockholm Fashion Week AW21

Beckmans College of Design presents Trailblazer, a design collaboration between international brands and the final-year Fashion students at Beckmans College of Design Stockholm.

The story of the trailblazer is the story of the innovator. The 11 collection concepts have eminated from the individual framework and story of each brand. By adding their own personal vision and strong artistic approach, the fashion students’ collections blaze a trail for others to walk on.

Concept and art direction by final-year students in Visual Communication.

Focusing on print and working with different dimensions, I seek to visualise an alternative approach to prints.

“What determines what a print is?”

In this collaboration with Marimekko I’ve chosen to work with the core essence of Marimekko’s prints and geometrical cuts.

The colourful and magical world of Zandra Rhodes inspired me to create this collection with many textile dimensions. The patterns and silhouettes are an intriguing blend of abstract and organic shapes. Prints with dramatic contrasts made up of formal Vietnamese symbols and romantic 19th-century paintings.

The collection is brightly-coloured, with exciting textures and nuances. Sheer and coarse materials in layers enhance a three-dimensional, vibrant effect. Ragged seams and large, embroidered zigzag stitching add to the raw, bohemian style of the collection.

Special thanks to Zandra Rhodes, for your time and enthusiasm.

In this project I want to compose a playful collection of bold, lively prints, colours and individuality. I want to use silhouettes that allow wearers to jump around and move freely, I want to make them FEEL BOLD.

Palmer//Harding, aka The Shirt Boys, aim to dress women in everyday life with the same enthusiasm and consideration as though it were a night out. Taking their inspiration from the shirt, they strive to balance elegance and attitude to achieve “simplicity, but dramatic simplicity” as they put it.

During this project my approach has been to apply their concept and aspiration to capture elegance. To explore it, I have based my research on the life of my grandmother, as she epitomises elegance to me.

The focus of the collection became even clearer when I studied old photos of her; I told her that she looked so elegant in these classic pieces, whereas if I wore them today, I would look vintage, , rather than elegant. And she explained that this was because the pieces weren’t classic at the time, they were modern, they expressed an attitude.

So, my intention with this collection is to capture the elegance of her style, in pieces that could be worn today and make you feel as elegant as she did in the 1950s, but modern enough to be relevant.

The collection “HELGA” is an interpretation of what something personal is. To step into somebody else’s world and try to understand it, try to live in it and create something meaningful out of it. Personality plays a very important role in my concept and because Matty Bovan with whom I’m collaborating admired femininity and concept, and female extravagance, I’m going to design for the most female version of me: HELGA.

This alter ego, a Russian-german 1930s diva, will blow your mind. She is undoubtedly the most confident woman I ever saw and she’s not afraid of anything. She is the definition of what I look up to and want to be like. Carefree and independent with a simple smile she can turn your troubles into fairy dust. And I promise you this: she’ll make you cry like a little boy.

My collection combines two worlds:
My fantasy glittery world and the ordinary world, the one right outside my door. I also challenge my own taste. I have combined fabrics that most people would say don't go together.

Materials in the collection: Sequins, tweed, knitted wool yarn, knitted faux fur yarn, wool tweed and azure.

My collection is inspired by the pop artistry and performers commercial ideas, and along with this, the reflection of individualistic growth. The collection is also inspired by Zandra Rhodes and the people and artist´s in the 80's and late 70's.

Ever since I was a child, my mom has passed down generations of knowledge of textiles, such as handcrafts like knitting and quilting, that are typical of the place where I grew up. Later on, as a teenager, I inherited a lot of my sister’s old clothes.

The mentality of keeping things and using what's available runs in the family. To repair, patch, inherit and save everything that can be saved. So, the research in this project is about going back to my roots in Dala-Järna. Inspired by the culture and the typical clothes, fabrics and techniques, I created this collection.

Nomen Nescio is a brand that applies a mindset of sustainability. Unlike most brands, it does not create for seasons, gender or a specific age group. Nomen Nescio wants to design black clothing for people with a minimalistic aesthetic that will last for several seasons and generations.

With this in mind, I want to create the ultimate elevated classics wardrobe featuring garments for every occasion in everyday life regardless of season. What isreally needed to achieve functionality and still make us feel confident and our best self? At work, school, the gym, at home and travelling to work.

I want to work with classic garments and smart multifunctional design, leaving you free to express yourself in the way you wear it. Zipping or buttoning in different ways to find who you want to be today. I would also like to offer a hem to length service where customers can order the right length. We have sizing for different body shapes but why not different sleeve and leg lengths? In this way, wearers can also have coat or trouser lengths altered according to their own requirements.

Over the past months, most of the world has faced unprecedented challenges. This situation brought to our societies a lot of confusion and anxiety but also led us to ask ourselves what was really important, how we could envision a new and better world, how we could unite in the face of adversity and work together.

Out of those graphs that are now so present in our lives and dehumanise a very human issue, I want to create something beautiful; from the confusion and shock of this situation I want to learn and grow, to find an emotional balance.
